By Free Press Staff SWANTON — After relinquishing an eight-run lead, Missisquoi seized the season-opening, 11-10 win over Colchester on Matthew Minkler’s run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning in high school baseball action Monday. David Laroche paced MVU with three singles and two RBIs and Taylor Marquis had two hits. Minkler was also the winning pitcher, striking out two in two innings of work. For Colchester, Brandon Arel had two RBIs on a single and Derek Sanderon singled, drove in a run and scored two runs. Hinesburg (VT) - In a tight game, it was Will Potter's bloop RBI single, and Davis Mikell's complete game performance that led CVU to a 1-0 win over BFA-St. Albans. Mikell, who started for CVU, threw a two hitter, fanning nine, while Will Potter had two hits, and drove in the winning run. BFA's Jordan Stone had one hit for the Bobwhites. Ryan Connor tossed six innings of four hit baseball, but allowed one earned run in the losing effort. Vergennes (VT) - In another matchup between these two Metro teams, it was the Laroche's of Missisquoi that was the difference. Collecting two RBI's apiece, Josh and David Laroche led the Thunderbirds past the Commodores 6-4. Devin Hayes had a triple along with two RBI's, coming up short in the comeback attempt. MVU's Matt St. Amour pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits on four earned runs. Charlie Stapleford took the loss, going five innings, and allowing five earned runs. Hinesburg (VT) - It was Brad Bissonette's big day at the plate, that helped CVU survive a upset against Middlebury. Bissonette went three for four, with a single, double, triple, along with two RBI's. His bloop single in the seventh, scored the winning run. Davis Mikell got the win, going two thirds of an inning, striking out one. Middlebury's Tyler Provencher went six and two thirds innings, allowing thirteen hits on five earned runs. Taylor Patterson went two for four, with a pair of RBI's in the losing effort. Swanton (VT) - It was production at the plate that led the Thunderbirds to a home win over the Minutemen. Elijah Eaton had a great day at the plate; producing three singles and two RBI's. MVU's Matt St. Amour allowed two hits over four innings. Jonas Hamiton went six, allowing six earned runs, while P. Mumford had a double for Mill River. Vergennes (VT) - Both Devin Hayes, and Tommy Lee Hodsden led Vergennes past the Eagles to advance to the quarter-finals. Hayes, pitched a complete game, allowing one hit, and fanning nine. Hodsden had a double and a triple on the day. MAU's Sawyer Kamman went six innings, allowing four runs on ten hits, while Nick Driscoll had a double for Mt. Abraham.
